Dental billing

CDT-coded, benefits checked, followed until paid. Dental claims run on their own code set, their own claim form and their own plan rules: frequency limits, annual maximums, waiting periods and attachments. We run them end to end, and send the procedures that belong on the medical plan to the medical claim instead.

01How we run it

How VisMed runs dental billing.

Reviewed by the VisMed programs & staffing team

Dental billing looks simpler than medical billing and fails in quieter ways. A crown billed inside the plan’s frequency limit, a patient whose annual maximum ran out in the spring, a claim sent without the X-ray or the narrative the plan asks for: none of these look wrong on the day. They come back weeks later as a denial or a smaller payment, and by then the patient has gone home thinking the visit was covered.

So we check before the chair, not after it. Each appointment is verified against the patient’s dental plan for frequencies, remaining maximum, waiting periods and what the plan needs attached. Major treatment gets a pre-determination first, so the estimate the patient signs is one the plan has seen. Procedures are coded in CDT on the ADA claim form, the attachments go with the claim, and every claim is followed with the plan until it pays or is corrected and appealed.

Some procedures belong on the medical plan: extractions with a medical complication, trauma, biopsies, sleep apnea appliances, and other care the medical policy covers. We cross-code those to CPT and ICD-10-CM and bill the medical plan, with the dental plan as secondary where coordination of benefits allows. Your team stays chairside; ours stays on the claims.

Dental billing, asked and answered.

What a practice asks about this service on the first call.

What do VisMed’s dental billing services include?

VisMed verifies dental benefits before the appointment, codes procedures in CDT on the ADA claim form, files pre-determinations for major treatment, sends claims with X-rays, charting and narratives attached, follows every claim until it pays, and corrects or appeals denials. Procedures that qualify for the medical plan are cross-coded and billed there.

Does VisMed bill medical insurance for dental procedures?

Yes, when the procedure qualifies under the patient’s medical policy. VisMed cross-codes the procedure from CDT to CPT with ICD-10-CM diagnoses, attaches the documentation the medical plan needs, and bills the dental plan as secondary where coordination of benefits allows.

How does VisMed avoid frequency and annual maximum denials?

By checking them before the visit. Each appointment is verified for the plan’s frequency limits, the patient’s remaining annual maximum and any waiting periods, so the front desk knows what the plan will pay and what the patient owes before treatment starts.
